The Zambia boys' basketball team got a consolation result on Thursday evening when they defeated Angola 58-49 at the six-nation Zone Six Cup of Nations U-16 preliminaries that were scheduled to close last night at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
The win came after three successive defeats to Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe after having opened the tournament with an impressive 127-10 against whipping boys and girls of the tournament.
Despite the victory, Zambia still missed a chance of representing Zone Six at the AfroBasket U-18 after shattered dream to qualify to the AfroBasket U-18 Africa Championships whose venue is yet to be decided.
The boys' team lost against Mozambique 81-54, South Africa 81-71 and Zimbabwe 55-52, but despite hammering Angola 58-49 it was not enough to secure them a ticket to the AfroBasket African Championships.
Coach for the boys' team, Noah Mabutwe who was impressed with the performance of his team during tournament advised the Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) to maintain the team saying it had a lot of promise for the future despite not living their dream to qualify for the African championship.
He said the future of the team would depend on commitment, discipline and exposure of the players to international tournaments.
Mabutwe advised the ZBA executive to give the team ample time to prepare for important future international assignments like the just ended championship. He said ZBA should in future cast the net for selection of players wide to include all the nine provinces, unlike the current trend where only a few players are chosen from along the line of rail. Mabutwe said most players were drawn from small clubs in Lusaka without considering the involvement of players from other provinces making the squad selection process challenging.
He commended the participating countries for playing according to the rules and discipline of the game. Both the boys and girls in Zambian teams had learnt something from the tournament to help enhance basketball in Zambia.
He said Zambia was a sports destination where athletes and sportsmanship can be developed if sports administration in the country could be treated seriously.
And girls coach Joseph Chowa advised the Zambian teams not to reflect on defeats that the team had suffered during the tournament but that they should consider working hard to replicate the talent and fighting spirit of South Africa and Mozambique Courtesy of: http://allafrica.com By Abraham Sakala
