 | Regional Basketball Champs roars into life | |
|
| | | THE long awaited Zone VI Federation of International Basketball Association Under-18 Championships will explode into life in Harare, tomorrow. The tournament, initially set to feature ten countries, has been reduced to a tri-nations series following a boycott of other regional countries under unclear circumstances. Mozambique (boys and girls), Angola girls and the host (boys and girls) will race for honors in the five-day tournament. 'These are the events we never experienced at our early ages playing basketball and we want to make sure the youngsters get as much exposure as possible. The Zone Six Championships will stimulate our junior development and it is also gives us a challenge to sharpen our administrative skills,' Basketball Union of Zimbabwe president, Addison Chiware was quoted in April when his Union won the bid to host the ten countries. It appears the local teams will not be gaining the much-needed exposure as anticipated before, but they stand a good chance of qualifying for the African Champions, to be held later this year. The ultimate winner of the round robin game series will represent the zone in the continental showdown as the event serve as qualifiers. Angola boys have automatically qualified by virtue of being the defending champions.

 | Bulawayo Hosts Basketball Event | |
|
| | | Basketball enthusiasts are in for a treat this year, as Bulawayo hosts the inter-provincial championships for the first time in eight years.
The tournament kicks off on 28 February at the Bulawayo Club for the Disabled. Bulawayo Province are the defending champions. Daniel Mombeshora, the Bulawayo Basketball Association vice-chairman (technical department), told Standardsport last week preparations were already in full swing, although they were still battling to secure sponsorship. 'It is good that the tournament is being held in Bulawayo as we last hosted the event eight years ago,' Mombeshora said. 'Our teams are already preparing for the tournament and the main aim is to retain the title.' Last year the tournament, held in Harare, was sponsored by a South Africa-based company, Mag Petroleum, which is yet to commit itself to this year's event. A fundraising event has been scheduled for 3 February, where BBA vice-chairman in charge of promotions, Joe Mujuru, would be the host. Mujuru said at least $12 billion would be needed to host the tournament, adding potential sponsors had made enquiries. 'The problem we have at the moment is that one of the potential sponsors wants to be the only sponsor for the tournament,' he said. 'But we are still negotiating as we are aiming to have more than one sponsor.' |

 | BUZ to Host Three Regional Tournaments | |
|
| | | by Paul Munyuki Harare
The Basketball Union of Zimbabwe is lining-up three major regional tournaments in the first half of this year. The games will take place between April 5 and June 14 but the venue of the tournaments is yet to be decided. This tournament will be the biggest basketball event since Zimbabwe hosted the All-Africa Games in 1995. Zimbabwe will host the Zone VI Fiba Under-18 Championships from April 5-12 before they host the women's Club Championships scheduled for May 3-10. A month latter Zimbabwe will also play host to the men's Club Championships from June 9 to 14. And BUZ are also expected to bid to host the Under-16 championships that are expected to take place in July or August this year. But BUZ administrator Simon Lawson said their main efforts at the moment lie with the Under-18 sides that will begin preparations next Friday. The preparations will begin with the trials selection in all the provinces with the trials expected to run for at most two days. 'Our number one objective at the moment is for the Under-18 to qualify for the Africa Championships where one country per zone will qualify before the addition of the hosts, status call and runners up to bring it to 12. 'At the moment our main efforts are on the Under-18 tournament as we are also beginning preparations as it is also the closest event on our calendar. 'Depending with the number of players or teams that would have turned up for the provincial trials, the selection process can go for two days with the boys on one day and the girls the other. 'We are looking at hosting the inter-country Under-18 tournament, the men's and women's club championships but we are hoping that we will again win the bid to host the Under-16 championships. 'The Under-18 tournament is set for early April before we go on to play hosts to the women's club championships and the men's tournament in June. 'In the recent past years the hosting of the club championships has largely been inter-changed between South Africa and Mozambique. 'But it is very fortunate that we managed to win the bid to host these games and we are not ending there as we would also like to host the Under-16 championships as well. 'But the date for the junior tournaments are yet to be decided as the games are likely to take place between July and August,' said Lawson. |

 | Four-Nation Basketball Tourney Bursts Into Life | |
|
| | | Paul Munyuki Harare
THE sixth edition of the four-nation basketball tournament featuring Namibia, Botswana Zambia and Zimbabwe bursts into life at the City Sports today with the hosts upbeat about their chances of winning the championships. Men and women's teams from the four nations are expected to take part in the three-day competition dubbed the Zinaboza tournament. Zambia hosted the previous two editions of the games and this year the Basketball Association of Zimbabwe took it upon themselves to host the tournament. The games will be played on a round-robin basis as there are only four teams in each of the categories. By yesterday, all the teams had confirmed their participation and BUZ tournament co-ordinator and administrator Simon Lawson said preparations were at an advanced stage. "All the teams have confirmed their participation for the games and we are expecting the visitors to be in the country by this evening (last night) as the games are starting on Wednesday afternoon. "The games will be at the City Sports Centre and will be running from 12noon until around 9.30pm for the three days," said Lawson.
The Zimbabwe teams went into full camp yesterday but the women's preparations were affected by the absence of some of their players who were on tour in South Africa with JBC. The six national team players who travelled with JBC are Sibongile Mkandla, Juliet Misihairabwi, Fadzai Mabasa, Isabel Tengende and Varsity's Alex Maseko who travelled as a guest player. "The women's camp started a bit late because there are some players who had travelled to South Africa with JBC but they are back now and everything is going on well and the final teams will be named before the games start," said Lawson. |

 | Harare Province Shine At Basketball Tournament | |
|
| | | By Augustine Hwata (The Herald ) Harare
HARARE Province asserted themselves as the best in schools basketball as they won gold in both the boys and girls NASH Under-20 inter-provincial tournament at Queen Elizabeth school yesterday. The provincial teams from the capital are also the defending champions in the National Youth Games and yesterday retained their place as kings with their players also scooping individual awards of excellence. The boys' side beat a battling Mashonaland West 61-37 in the final. Ranganai Ndinga was judged the Most Valuable Player (boys) at the tournament, which got underway with the preliminary group matches on Saturday. Midlands stunned Bulawayo in the third-place play-off to take bronze, Mashonaland East came fifth, Matabeleland South sixth, Masvingo seventh, Mashonaland Central eighth, Manicaland ninth and Matabeleland North in last place. Shingai Mangoma was the beacon in the Harare girls' side when she was named the Most Valuable Player after leading her side to a 59-14 win over Manicaland in the final. Mashonaland East got the better of Mashonaland West to grab the bronze while the other places went to Mashonaland Central, Matabeleland South, Midlands, Masvingo, Bulawayo and Matabeleland North in that order. Tournament director Simon Lawson was yesterday happy that NASH had managed to revive the Under-20 tournament which was last held in 2004. "I am happy that we have managed to stage the event even without corporate sponsors. "It had to take a lot of effort from the Harare Province and other stakeholders to find money for the games. "Having lots of tournaments for schools and the youth will not only help to develop our game but also reduce age-cheating. "One reason why schools cheat is because they will have been starved of tournaments but now they can play in the Under-16, the Milo, the national youth games and now the Under-20 inter-pros in back," said Lawson.
Basketball Union of Zimbabwe president Addison Chiware said there was need to harness all the talent in the schools for the benefit of the senior national team. |
