NEW YORK and WASHINGTON, Oct. 20, 2011 - Working to engage and empower underserved youth both on the court and in the classroom in the worlds newest country, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced today that NBA Legend Sam Perkins and NBA Global Ambassador Dikembe Mutombo will travel to the Republic of South Sudan, October 22-26, 2011, as sports envoys.
Sports diplomacy builds on Secretary Clintons vision of smart power diplomacy. It embraces the use of a full range of diplomatic tools, including sports, to bring people together for greater understanding.
During their trip, Perkins and Mutombo will lead a series of basketball clinics and teambuilding exercises with young people. In addition, the sports diplomats will meet with young people participating in a scholarship program that works to bridge barriers and provide gender equality in education for women and girls, as well as underserved boys. They will also join local, state, and national government officials in a service project to refurbish the capital city.
As an NBA Global Ambassador, Mutombo recently attended the NBAs Basketball without Borders Africa 2011 program in Johannesburg, where the league opened an office in 2010. This is his first trip on behalf of the Department of State as a sports envoy. Sam Perkins, a 17-year NBA veteran who has made three NBA Finals appearances, has served as a sports diplomat worldwide, including Indonesia in 2010, Qatar in 2009, Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan in 2008, and Algeria 2005.
This is a return trip to South Sudan for the NBA after a delegation from NBA Africa joined the South Sudan Independence Celebration in Juba on July 8-10 and staged a number of community engagement events including basketball clinics for local youth. In partnership with Sudan Sunrise, the NBA is supporting education by raising awareness and funds to build new schools, helping to realize the dream of Manute Bol, an NBA Legend and Sudanese native who passed away in June 2010.
Our partnership with the US State Department is an important part of our efforts to positively impact communities globally, said Amadou Fall, Vice President of Development, NBA Africa. 'The sports envoy program will enable us to build on our efforts in South Sudan and use the game of basketball to contribute to the positive development of youth and communities in the world's newest nation.'
Two sports envoys trips to Africa have already been held this year with NBA Legend Bo Outlaw and WNBA Legend Edna Campbell traveling to the Republic of the Congo, and NBA Legend Dee Brown and WNBA Legend Tamika Raymond traveling to Tanzania. In partnership with SportsUnited, 42 NBA and WNBA players and coaches have visited 19 different countries since 2004, where they have conducted basketball clinics for thousands of young boys, girls and coaches.
SportsUnited is the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs premier sports exchange program at the U.S. Department of State. Athletes and coaches from a range of sports are chosen to conduct clinics, visit schools, and engage with youth overseas in a dialogue on the importance of an education, positive health practices, and respect for diversity. Since 2003, SportsUnited has brought more than 600 athletes from 44 countries to the U.S. to participate in Sport Visitor programs. Since 2005, SportsUnited has sent more than 100 U.S. athletes to 40 countries to participate in Sport Envoy programs.
The NBA has a long history in the African continent and opened its first office in Africa in 2010, appointing Amadou Gallo Fall as Vice President for Development. NBA games, featuring ten players from Africa, were broadcast to fans in 55 African countries and territories in five languages for the 2010-11 season. Through NBA Cares, the NBA has helped create 30 places to live, learn or play in Africa, including technology centers, libraries, youth hostels, dining facilities, health clinics, homes and basketball courts.
For the past nine years the NBA has conducted Basketball without Borders Africa, a basketball instructional camp for young people that also promotes leadership, education, sportsmanship, and healthy living. More than 100 NBA players and team personnel and more than 700 campers have participated in the camps in Johannesburg and Dakar.

Team Sasol South Africa swept into the final of the African Paralympic wheelchair basketball qualifiers in Rabat, Morocco, as they beat Nigeria 72-34 in their last round robin game on Wednesday night.
The team now head into the final against hosts Morocco having won all three of their games to determine who will take the sole qualifying spot for London 2012.
The South Africans were in control throughout, surging ahead to 25-12 after the first quarter and then widening the gap to go into half time 45-17 up.
In the third quarter they consolidated their lead, with 66-23 before closing the game out.
Coach Patrick Fick was overjoyed with the victory, especially as it puts them into the final unbeaten.
He praised assistant coach Shadrack Mopoeng, who took charge of the team for the game.
'Shadrack was head coach today, and we use these opportunities to get the best out of our coaches. He ran a few different plays and it worked well. He did a fantastic job and the result speaks for itself,' Fick said.
The team also rested stalwarts Richard Nortje and Marius Papenfus for the final, which gave others like Jaco Velloen and Cecil Dumond an opportunity to get some court time ahead of the all-important match.
The team also celebrated two more milestones as Justin Govender and Thandile Zonke both earned their 100th caps for the team in the victory.
While South Africa have the confidence going into the final, they know they will need to be at their best against Morocco if they are to achieve their goal of qualifying for London 2012.
'It is going to be a challenge,' Fick declared, 'It is a one-off game and anything can happen, so we will need to go in focused. But while it is a huge challenge, we are quietly confident.'
South Africa beat Egypt 63-62 in a nail-biting encounter on Monday, and followed it up with a powerhouse performance to beat Morocco 68-54 on Tuesday.
The final will take place on Thursday evening 19:00 SA time, with the winner qualifying for the Paralympics 2012.
