 | Badiane set to play for the Grizzlies in the NBA Summer League | |
|
| | | Malick Badiane (211-F/C-84) headed to Dallas a few days ago to get in shape for the upcoming NBA Summer League where he should be playing for the Memphis Grizzlies. The Senegalese is currently practicing with DeSagana Diop (213-C-83) and other players, thanks to his contacts to the Mavs' director of scouting Gallo Fall. He had a difficult start into the last season after receiving barely time on the court in Dijon and transferred to Saint Vallier Basket Drome in the French Pro B where he gained back his confidence and excelled on the floor while averaging 11,3 ppg and 9,4 rpg and saved the team of being relegated to a lower league.
If he won't be signed by the Grizzlies, who are currently holding his draft rights, badiane may head back to Europe for a lucrative contract.

 | Cup of St.Michel : Bopp's experience makes the difference | |
|
|
| | | The four-time cup winners (1996, 2000, 2004 and 2006) showed no mercy on the court with the youthful squad of DUC and took home the cup of St.Michel by thrashing the 'students' 69-55 at the stadium Marius N'diaye in Dakar. Bopp was led by veterans El Hadji Malick Gadiaga (189-G-81) , Ibrahima 'Fafa' Diatta, Ibrahima Gueye and Malick Gueye Faye while DUC counted on size with centers Mamadou Ndiaye and Abdoul Ba but the lack of maturity hampered DUC all through the game, as they kept missing easy baskets and allowed Bopp to rebound back into the game to lead at halftime 32-28.The third quarter was decisive for Bopp as DUC failed to score a basket for five minutes and missed a virtual leader to organize the team on the court.Gadiaga altogether with his teammates Robert Mendy and Gueye Faye , scored at will and widened the gap by 14 points at the end of the third. DUC's Serigne Mbaye Toure led a late rally of the 'students' in the fourth quarter but Gadiaga and Gueye Faye responded with quick baskets and were able to hold off the attempt to cut the deficit and saved the deserved winner. Bopp took home the well-earned cup with ease while Gadiaga got the top-scorer award and Ibrahima Diatta earned the MVP award.

 | First annual meeting of the Zone II in Dakar: Henry Gomes: "Our federations sleep" | |
|
| | | The Zone II held its first annual conference in Dakar last Saturday. A zone that is crumbling under the weight of financial difficulties and seeking candidates for the organization of the playoff tournaments for men.
The Zone II desperately sought a candidate for the organisation of the qualifiers for African championships 2009. On the senior level, Guinea is the sole candidate, while the women's competition has no possible host in sight so far. A possibility would be to create a league system instead of a tournament so a host wouldn't be needed. Furthermore, Guinean Omar N'diaye suggested to FIBA-Africa to review the current qualification system. He points out, that the zonal qualifiers would gain more attraction if only the Champions and the host country would be automatically qualified while the other countries that were placed second to eight have to play again the zonal qualifiers instead of being automatically qualified for the next African Championships.
Another problem is facing the area: Financial difficulties related to the contribution of non-member countries. Currently only Cape Verde is reliable. And Dakar, which should host the headquarters of the zone, is outstanding for its unpaid bills. However, the contribution is only $ 300 per year, or 135000 F Cfa.
A positive note is the recent success of the U-16 zonal championships which have been held in Guinea-Bissau and that nine (Gambia, Sierra Leone and Mauretania were absent) of 12 members of the zone were present in Dakar. |
