Nigeria, by the weekend, stepped much closer to getting the hosting right for the 2011 African Nations Cup Basketball competition for men by submitting the letter of guarantee from the Federal Government of Nigeria to the African governing body FIBA Africa. The President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Tijjani Umar said that the submission of the letter followed elaborate discussion with the government.
'What can be rightly said is that we have taken yet another great leap towards getting the hosting right for the continents biggest basketball competition. The discussion this time was constructive and engaging. We have passed every mark set with very high grades and we can say at this time that we are very confident that Nigeria will host Africa next year. What we demonstrated by the weekend is that the Federation is not just acting on its own but has the full backing of the Federal government of Nigeria. We are determined to host the competition at a very high level expected of the country, Umar said.
The continental body requires a letter of guarantee from the government of any country bidding to host as proof of the countrys firmed interest in the hosting of the competition.
A visitation panel of FIBA Africa are expected to visit Nigeria in a tour of facilities in a yet to be confirmed date. Nigeria is in contention with Cote dIvoire and Madagascar as host for Afrobasket 2011. Nigeria is yet to host the continent biggest basketball showpiece. FIBA Africa
