By Leroy M. Sonpon, III Liberias multi-national promotional firm, the Premier Services Group (PSG), in fulfillment of its obligations in the three-year contract with the Liberia Basketball Federation (LBF), and attested to by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has donated a Perkins 27 KVA Generator, valued at about US$12,000. Delivering the generator to the LBF family, Dr. Laurence K. Bropleh, Executive Director for Public Relations for PSG, asserted that the donation was being made in collaboration with CELLCOM GSM. The former Information Minister stated that the donation is part of PSGs contractual commitment to the LBF for the delivery of an uninterrupted lighting system and goes towards making the game of basketball number one in Liberia. Executive member, Solomon C. George, on behalf of the President and Executive Committee of the LBF, thanked PSG and CELLCOM GSM for the donation. We are grateful to PSG and CELLCOM GSM for the generator because many of our fans always expressed their reluctance to witness the game owing to our interrupted lighting system. Now with the new generator, their fears have been erased, he said. Meanwhile, the former President of the LBF, Philipbert Browne, who penned the sponsorship deal with Lone Star Cell in 2003, has emphatically and strongly denied claims that the LBF owes a one-year deal with Lone Star Cell according to the five-year contract. Browne, who is currently the President of the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC), told journalists that the five-year sponsorship deal between the LBF and Lone Star Cell is over, evidenced by the successful passing of the years between 2003 and 2007. Extolling Lone Star Cell Company, the LNOC president indicated that the GSM Company was committed to the sponsorship deal, due to the purchasing of the 24-second clock, electronic score-board, refurbishing of the bathrooms and players dressing room, among others things. The sponsorship deal between the LBF and the Lone Star Cell officially ended in 2007. It was during my administration that the five- year contract was signed in 2003 and in 2005, I left the LBF. The remaining three years, during the administration of Gbour Wilson came to a close. The LBF failed to renew contract with Lone Star Cell because they were bluffing and reluctant to enter into another agreement. So, I personally helped the LBF as head of the LNOC by linking them with PSG. Comparing the two contracts, Lone Star Cell only provided kinds and did renovation works, while PSG is giving US$10,000 annually to the LBF, with 25 percent going to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. In addition to the annual US$10,000, PSG will be [providing] basketball equipment for the teams and referees, valued US$3,000 and also provides other things as need arises, such as the 27 KVA generator, Browne asserted. Efforts to contact the Marketing and Public Relations departments of Lone Star Cell and appointments to speak with representatives proved futile up to press time.
