The 2012 Nairobi Provincial League will be divided into two zones to accommodate the new teams expected to join the fray, a top Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) official has said. NBA chairman Ronnie Owino said the zoning will help cut down on the number of matches in a season and ensure the league does not run beyond October of every year. The league had 22 teams in both categories last year. He said the new season will tip off on April 14 at the Nairobi Railways Club although a number of teams yet to be determined. 'We will start our programme in April with about 20 men and eight women teams. With Upper Hill School and Kenya Airways moving up to the national league, we have new teams coming in to join the show. Other than the promoted ones, we will retain the teams we had and also include some more.We would not like to leave any team out,' he said. Meanwhile, Owino confirmed Kenya will send the men and women's teams to Kampala, Uganda for the 14th edition of the East and Central Africa Inter Cities championships despite financial hardships. The event will bring together cities from Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Somaila, Burundi, Rwanda and Host Uganda. The week long event throws off April 24. 'As the defending champions in both the men and women category, we will ensure our teams go to Kampala for this championships,' he said. Courtesy of: Nairobi Star (Nairobi)

Co-operative Bank braved Mombasa heat to beat hosts Kenya Ports Authority 64-61 in the Kenya Basketball Federation first semi final play-off match at the Mombasa Sports Club. The hosts took a 17-9 lead into the first quarter but the bankers kept their cool to over turn the scoring in the second and third quarters, tying the match 54-54. A hard tackle by Fred Odongo on Titus Kioko saw Kioko bag maximum points to break the tie and improve his sides victory prospects. And 45 seconds to the final whistle, the match resulted into sea-saw duel with both sets of spectators cheering their teams. Former KPA player Peter Kiganyas efforts to narrow the gap against his old team through three points shot were futile. But the dockers were frustrated by former Mombasa Aga Khan Secondary Schools Salim Ali, who penetrated their defence with ease to collect two free shots. KPA will have to blame themselves after Eugene Genga failed to utilise a last minute double free shots after he was fouled in the box. Earlier on, KPA women had out played Sprite Storms 42-33 at the same venue.

NAIROBI Basketball Association (NBA) Provincial League champions Upper Hill and Safe Spaces are ready for new challenges in the top league. The two teams, who gained promotion to the national Division One and women Premier League respectively said they have what it takes to survive at the top level. The students' tactician George Mayienga admitted surviving at the national league's second tier would not be an easy task but exuded confidence that his boys are upto the task. 'It will not be easy playing up there.
But I am ready for the challenges ahead. With the kind of players in this team, we will be up there with the best,' said Mayienga, who also guided the team to their first national schools tournament in Kakamega early this year. Spaces tactician John 'Moish' Njuguna was equally upbeat. 'Last year we were second in the league but could not move up due to finances. This time we are all set and will make some few recruitments to help us stay up there,' he said. Upper Hill beat Airways 79-75 while Safe Spaces beat Africa Nazarene University (ANU) 58-46 to claim the men and women's crowns respectively during the best of five game series.
