national team to guarantee the second place spot in the Zone II tournament held in Dakar, and gain
direct access to AfroBasket 2011. Since Senegal beat Mali by 5 pontos (71-66), in the last

direct access to AfroBasket 2011. Since Senegal beat Mali by 5 pontos (71-66), in the last game of the tournament, Mali finished in the second place spot, and with direct acess to AFrobasket
alonside Senegal. Henry Gomes, member of the Cape Verde basketball federation, considers it 'frustrating' the third place finish in the tournament. The Capeverdeans did come away with more trophies, as Ivan Almeida (198-G-89, college: Stonehill) was
selected as the best player of the tournament, also finishing as the best scorer, and selected to all tournament

On the 5th day of Qualifiers Zone II, the lions of Senegal dominated Cape Verde 89-60, and continue their unbeaten run in this tournament.
Senegal had already qualified, however Cape Verde absolutely had to win this game in order to to get its ticket to Afrobasket 2011.

On the 5th day of Qualifiers Zone II, the lions of Senegal dominated Cape Verde 89-60, and continue their unbeaten run in this tournament. Senegal had already qualified, however Cape Verde absolutely had to win this game in order to to get its ticket to Afrobasket 2011. Cape Verde is now in a complicated situation. To qualify for the Afrobasket 2011, the National Team has to beat Guinea-Bissau by a minimum difference of 40 points, and hope that Senegal also beats Mali by a large margin in today's games, to close the competition. Federation member, Henry Gomes, considers it 'very difficult' for them to qualify for the next Afrobasket in Abidjan. The 1st quarter saw both teams shooting well, and playing aggressive defense, in the end the Senegalese barely lead 21-16. In the second quarter, Faye Mohammad and his teammates were more dominant in the offensive end. hile Cape Verde played great zone defense, they were not able to score points. The team lacks scores, nd also good team play. With the inability to score more points, the Senegalese took advantage, and iden the gap. At the end of the second period the lead was 17 points, 39 to 22, with the cape Verde T only scoring 6 points. During the third quarter, Ivan Almeida (Top scorer Cape Verde of the Tournament) fouled out of the game, hile Joel Almeida (195-F-85, college: Brockport St.) was in foul trouble. The Cape Verdeans still did give up, and continued their aggressive defense, lead by Peter Cipriano and Fidel Mendonca. With strong full court press and stable zone defense the Cape Verde got close to 5 points down, 44-49. However, by the end of the hird period the game had changed, the Cape Verdean and the Senegalese coaches made some changes, which came out better for the Senegalese. The lions reacted quickly and added more points to the scoreboard. t the beginning of last quarter, the score was 59-44 in favor of the Senegalese. Until the end of the game, Faye, Dieng, N'Diaye and others simply control the lead. The final score of the game was 89-60 for Senegal. In the other game, Mali beat Guinea-Bissau by 74-44. Today, for the close of the Basketball Tournament of Zone II, qualifying for Afrobasket 2011: Cape Verde x Guinea-Bissau, Senegal x Mali.

The second round of games for the zone II tournament continued yesterday, and the Cape Verde National Teamans showed that they want to be in the next Afrobasket.
The Cape Verde National Team beat Mali NT 78 to 71.
The 1st quarter was dominated by Mali, which after an 11-0 run won the period 21-12.

The 1st quarter was dominated by Mali, which after an 11-0 run won the period 21-12. Beginning the second quarter, Alex Nwora men awoke. Led by their Captain Joel Almeida (195-F-85, college: Brockport St.) (top scorer of the game with 22 points), Cape Verde National Team fought back in the game. They got the game closer, and lost the 2nd quarter 22-20. However, coming out of the locker room, the team continued with the aggressive defense, and won the 3rd 21-13. Cape Verde National Team is stil having problems in the offensive end, the team is not playing very well, too many individual plays, and little ball movement. In the las quarter, the defense continued and they held Mali to only 7 points. This victory 78 to 71, places Cape Verde National Team in the race for qualification for Afrobasket 2011.
